Brief Information Horace Greeley was an influential American newspaper editor and founder of the New-York Tribune, a prominent newspaper of the mid-19th century. He was a leading voice for abolitionism, westward expansion, and various social reforms, famously advising "Go West, young man." Greeley also served as a U.S. Representative from New York and was a Liberal Republican and Democratic Party presidential candidate in 1872.
